Domaine de la Janasse Chaupin spotlight
The Jysk Vin film is Domaine de la Janasse in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, with the Sabon family on camera for the house behind this sandy-site Chaupin. House film, not a Chaupin-only clip.

2021 Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Chaupin Rhone, France
The Sabon family's pure-Grenache Chaupin from sandy 1912 parcels, perfume over power in a cooler 2021, a bottle you can open at fifty-five dollars.
The 2021 Chaupin is 100 percent Grenache from Chapouin, La Janasse, and La Crau: black cherry, plum, garrigue, and crushed herbs on a fresher frame than a hot year, now $55.
Sand and a cooler year: Janasse's Grenache without the armor
Chaupin is the Grenache purity play from this house. Cooler sandy parcels, some planted in 1912, keep the wine perfumed instead of brute. Decanter 96 called the 2021 long, pure, and velvety, black-fruited for a pure Grenache, already accessible, with freshness to age. Jeb Dunnuck found black cherries, melted licorice, peppery garrigue, and rose. Vinous added ripe red fruit, dried herbs, licorice, and mint at 15 percent alcohol.

The house
Christophe and Isabelle Sabon run Domaine de la Janasse. Chaupin was isolated as its own cuvee because the old-vine Grenache on sand had a different energy from the flagship blend.
The wine
100% Grenache from Chapouin, La Janasse, and La Crau. About one-third stems on the 2021, then a year in foudre and demi-muid. 15% ABV.
The scores
Decanter 96. Jeb Dunnuck 94. James Suckling 94. Vinous 94. Wine Spectator 93.
The drinker
Cherry and garrigue first. Decant 45 minutes. Serve 60 to 64 F. Herb yogurt lamb chops or a slow beef bourguignon.
Black fruit and oregano, then a velvety line
Decanter found lifted plum dusted with dried oregano, generous without excess, alcohol integrated. James Suckling opened on cherries, red plums, cinnamon, nutmeg, dried leaves, roasted meat, black pepper, stones, and dried flowers, then a creamy red-berry palate. Wine Spectator found steeped cherry and raspberry paste with a graphite ballast.

A cooler, smaller Southern Rhone year. Frost cut volume across the appellation. What remains in Chaupin is freshness and balance: Decanter's reason the 2021 will age without needing heat for concentration.
Black cherry, plum, red plum, garrigue, oregano, rose, licorice, mint, dried flowers.
Full but not heavy, fine tannin, 15% ABV, foudre and demi-muid, about one-third stems.
Velvety, mineral, persistent. Decant 45 minutes. Serve 60 to 64 F.
Sandy sites, some stems, large oak
On the Janasse map, Chaupin is 100 percent Grenache from the cold, late terroirs of Chapouin, La Janasse, and the La Crau plateau. That is why this cuvee smells like kirsch and herb instead of new-oak gloss.

Jeb Dunnuck noted about one-third stems on the 2021. Vinous has a year in foudre and demi-muids. The oldest referenced plantings date to 1912.
Serve 60 to 64 F. Forty-five minutes of air is for flowers, oregano, and crushed stone.
Why Chaupin had to be its own bottle
Janasse treated its vineyard mosaic as the story, not just the appellation name on the label.

Aime Sabon founded Domaine de la Janasse in 1973. Christophe took the cellar in 1991. Isabelle joined in 2001.
Chaupin came into focus because the old-vine Grenache on sand had its own energy: aromatic, pure, later ripening.
It remains the bottle for drinkers who love Chateauneuf and want finesse with the fire, the Grenache-driven cuvee from this house.
Cook with herbs, yogurt, and a little patience
Chaupin wants savory edges: lamb, yogurt, rosemary, thyme, garlic, mushrooms, and pan juices that echo garrigue and dark-cherry depth.
Two plates. One lamb chop with herb yogurt. One classic beef bourguignon. Both can take sandy-site Grenache.
Serve 60 to 64 F. Decant 45 minutes for current drinking. Use a generous Rhone bowl.
Lamb Chops with Fresh Herb Yogurt
Rosemary, yogurt, and a rosy chop give Grenache richness, aromatics, and a clean savory line.
Why it works: Lamb softens the tannins while the herb yogurt mirrors garrigue, oregano, and crushed-stone lift.

Classic Beef Bourguignon
Slow beef, mushrooms, carrots, and wine-dark sauce pull the bottle toward deeper cherry, spice, and earth.
Why it works: The stew's umami and braise texture meet ripe fruit and a firm frame without making the pairing feel heavy.

Decanter 96. One hundred percent Grenache. Fifty-five dollars against a $125 typical retail.
Put it in the cart. This is the Janasse bottle for a table that wants old-vine Grenache with 2021's extra air.
