2022 Weingut Prager Achleiten Riesling Smaragd Wachau, Austria (98F)
Toni and Robert Bodenstein's historic Achleiten Riesling, Falstaff 98, a dry Wachau Smaragd you can open at fifty dollars.
The 2022 Achleiten Smaragd is 100 percent Riesling from gneiss terraces above Weissenkirchen: white peach, lime, white apple, baby pineapple, and a long mineral close, now $50.
Achleiten gneiss, not a generic Wachau lime dart
Achleiten is one of the Wachau's great Riesling terraces: gneiss up top, dark amphibolite below, meagre soil, reduced yields. Prager bottles it as Smaragd, the dry, dense Wachau category. Falstaff 98, Peter Moser: fine floral nuances, white peach, lime, taut white apple, vibrant acidity, baby pineapple, length and ageing potential. James Suckling 96: youthful, elegant, subtle power, white peach, jasmine, neroli, bergamot, a long focused mineral finish. Wine Enthusiast 92, Aleks Zecevic: citrus and orchard fruit, elderflower, white pepper, wet stone, saffron. This is the bottle that puts Prager's Achleiten on a table at fifty dollars.

The house
Franz Prager made the name. Toni and Ilse Bodenstein took over in 1990. Robert Bodenstein now runs the Weissenkirchen cellar.
The wine
100% Riesling, Achleiten Smaragd. Spontaneous ferment, stainless steel, dry. 13% ABV, about 3.7 g/L residual.
The scores
Falstaff 98. James Suckling 96. Wine Enthusiast 92.
The drinker
White peach and stone first. Serve 46 to 50 F. No decant. Salmon cakes or pork schnitzel.
White peach and lime, then apple, pineapple, and stone
Moser found light greenish yellow with silver reflections, then fine floral nuances, white peach, and a hint of lime, taut white apple, vibrant acidity, lively mineral, baby pineapple on the finish. Suckling found delicate white peach, jasmine, neroli, and bergamot, medium to full, beautiful freshness, extremely focused mineral length. Zecevic added elderflower, white pepper, wet stone, and saffron.

A Wachau year with slightly lower alcohol and extra mineral depth next to 2021. Prager kept Achleiten taut instead of broad. Drink now through the 2040s with a cold glass.
White peach, lime, jasmine, neroli, bergamot, white apple, baby pineapple, elderflower.
Medium, 13% ABV, taut acidity, Smaragd density, dry, mineral grip.
Wet stone, saffron, length. Serve 46 to 50 F. No decant.
Gneiss terraces, steel, a dry Smaragd line
Prager harvests Achleiten by hand from steep terraces, ferments Riesling spontaneously, and raises it in stainless steel so peach, lime, and stone stay in front of any barrel idea. Smaragd here means dry, dense, and built to age, not residual sweetness. 13 percent alcohol.

Upper terraces are gneiss. Lower terraces are dark schistous amphibolite. That split is why Achleiten tastes like stone and peach, not just lime.
Serve 46 to 50 F. No decant. Salmon, schnitzel, or a tomato-goat tart.
From stone to wine, on a vineyard mentioned for centuries
Prager's motto is from stone to wine. Achleiten is the terrace that made that sentence famous for Riesling.

Toni Bodenstein, a geologist, married Ilse Prager and took the cellar in 1990. Robert now makes the wines.
Achleiten and Klaus sit on the same hill and drink completely differently. Wachstum Bodenstein is the high experimental Riesling.
The 2022 Achleiten is that terrace in a mineral year: Falstaff 98, fifty dollars against $100 typical.
Salmon cakes, then a golden cutlet
Dry Wachau Riesling loves citrus, crunch, and a little fat. Lemongrass salmon cakes and schnitzel both keep peach, lime, and stone in the same key.
Two plates. One lemongrass salmon cake. One pork schnitzel. Both can take Achleiten acidity and stone.
Serve 46 to 50 F. No decant. A cold glass keeps peach, lime, and wet stone in front.
Lemongrass Salmon Cakes with Garlic-Basil Aioli
Citrus, herbs, and a fried crust. Achleiten Riesling's easiest landing.
Why it works: Vibrant acidity cuts the aioli. White peach, lime, and mineral echo lemongrass and basil.

Pork Schnitzel with Apple Fennel Slaw
A crisp cutlet brings richness and crunch. Apple, fennel, and lemon keep the plate lifted.
Why it works: The Riesling cuts the fried crust while orchard fruit, citrus, and stone echo the slaw.

Put it in the cart. This is the Wachau bottle for a table that wants gneiss and peach, not a generic lime slogan.
