Continuum Estate estate spotlight
Tim Mondavi presents Continuum Sage Mountain Vineyard at Vinous Icons NYC 2025, the family line that ends in this 2023 bottle.

2023 Continuum Proprietary Red
The Holy Grail proprietary red. Blue-chip Continuum. 41 percent Cabernet Franc, sitting right in the pocket.
Continuum is the blue-chip Napa proprietary red that sells out year after year. 2023 is one of the best vintages on record, Tim Mondavi's 50th harvest, built on 41 percent Cabernet Franc so the wine feels complete, not obvious. Sixty bottles. $275 against a $310 SRP.
Sixty bottles of a sellout vintage
A pinnacle proprietary red that never sits still
Continuum sells out on arrival, vintage after vintage. 2023 is one of the best years on record here, and the blend breaks Napa logic on purpose: 41 percent Cabernet Franc.

The rarity
Continuum is a blue-chip proprietary red that vanishes year after year. This drop is 60 bottles. When they are gone, they are gone.
The vintage
2023 is one of the best vintages on record at Sage Mountain. Cool, late, slow to ripen, the kind of year the estate compares to 1974. Tim Mondavi's 50th harvest.
The Franc
41 percent Cabernet Franc in a flagship Prop Red. It should not work by normal Napa math. It sits right in the pocket: perfume, lift, and taste over formula.
The buy
$275 a bottle against a $310 SRP. James Suckling 99, Jeb Dunnuck 99, Wine Advocate 97-100 from barrel. Lock six or twelve before this allocation clears.
Two 99s, and Parker in the 97-100 band
Lead with James Suckling at 99. Jeb Dunnuck matches it. Vinous, Decanter, and Wine Spectator sit at 97. Joe Czerwinski scored a 2023 barrel sample 97-100 in The Wine Advocate, October 17, 2024.

What does $275 buy when Continuum never sits on a shelf?
Sixty bottles of a sellout proprietary red, $275 against a $310 SRP supplied for this promotion.

Add 6 Bottles • $1,650Rose petal, bergamot, then the mountain
The estate writes 2023 as lifted and ethereal, held against volcanic graphite and tender tannin.

One of the best vintages on record at this site. Abundant early rain, then a cool late season with long, even ripening. Budbreak ran 20 days late. Harvest ran October 3 to 19 at about 2.5 tons per acre. The estate calls it a 1974 kind of year.
Crushed rose petal and bergamot over deep ruby and blue fruit. Bing cherry, cacao, violet, and black pepper with savory wild herb.
Lifted and ethereal on the palate, tannin still tender, set against volcanic and graphitic mineral precision from the hillside.
Freshness and concentration together. Decant before service. Drink now with air, or hold through the next two decades.
Rose petal, bergamot, and high-toned red fruit.
Cacao, bing cherry, and wild herb come forward.
Graphite and volcanic mineral sit under the fruit.
Primary fruit and perfume, tannin still tender.
Wine Advocate drink window starts 2027. The Wine Palate window starts 2029.
Parker to 2050. The Palate window runs to 2065 for this vintage.
Forty-one percent Cabernet Franc defies the usual Napa math
Most flagship proprietary reds hide Franc in the margins. Continuum 2023 puts it at the center and goes for taste.

Fruit: Night-harvested by hand, sorted, then gravity-fed to French oak and concrete. A three-day cold soak, then ferment with pumpovers and delestage. Skins for 17 to 27 days, then basket press.
Aging: Twenty-one months sur lie. 56 percent new French oak, 43 percent neutral oak, 1 percent concrete amphora. Racked sparingly. Bottled without fining or filtration.
Blend: 46 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 41 percent Cabernet Franc, 7 percent Merlot, 6 percent Petit Verdot. That Franc share is the point. It should feel off-balance. Instead it sits right in the pocket: perfume, lift, and a softness inside mountain concentration. Groundbreaking for a pinnacle Prop Red, because the wine chases ultimate taste, not a Cabernet formula.
The Mondavi pinnacle, one wine, one hillside
Continuum is the blue-chip proprietary red of Sage Mountain: one bottling, tiny production, gone when the list is gone.

Tim grew up on the Oakville floor. For Continuum he wanted altitude, volcanic rock, and a site that would still speak in a hard year. Sage Mountain on Pritchard Hill became that place.
Four generations now tend 71 planted acres inside 173 of hillside, with wild sage and bay laurel at the edges. Continuum is one wine from that ground, not a portfolio with a flagship buried in it.
The 2023 label carries Chiara Mondavi's vine painting and the line My 50th Vintage. This is the harvest that should not have sat still.
Lamb on the bone, duck with cherry
Tender tannin, wild herb, and bing cherry want rosemary, garlic, and a gloss of fruit, not a heavy crust that buries the wine.
Two plates. One rack of lamb. One duck breast with Bing cherry sauce. Both leave room for the wine.
Decant 45 minutes. Serve near 62 F in a Bordeaux glass. The tannins are already polite. Air is for perfume, not rescue.
Rosemary garlic rack of lamb
Nagi's rosemary garlic marinade, roasted until the rib is pink. Fat, herb, and char meet the wine's Franc and wild sage.
Why it works: Rosemary and garlic echo Sage Mountain garrigue, while lamb fat softens the still-tender tannin.

Duck breast with Bing cherry sauce
Serious Eats sweet-tart duck, crispy skin, halved Bing cherries in the pan. The wine already smells like that fruit.
Why it works: Bing cherry is in the estate tasting note. Duck fat and balsamic give the mineral finish a savory place to land.

This is Sage Mountain's Holy Grail proprietary red, in a vintage collectors will hunt for a decade.
Rose petal, bergamot, cherry. 62 F, lamb or duck.
Six bottles at $1,650. Continuum does not linger.
Twelve at $3,300, ships free, before the allocation clears.
Year after year this wine vanishes. Take 2023 while the Franc is still in the pocket and the 60 bottles are still here.
