Why this bottle matters

Four Paso grapes, one bright glass

Paso gives Kandarian room to mix varieties that rarely share a bottle. Chardonnay is the core. Viognier, Clairette Blanche, and Albariño keep the acidity up and the perfume on. Sunset International Wine Competition gave the 2023 a Gold and 93 points. The winery's own glass is lemon meringue, white peach, ripe pear, marmalade, and a touch of marzipan. That is the buy.

Review

Sunset Gold, 93 points, on this vintage

Serial announced the medal on August 11, 2025. The competition is judged by Master Sommeliers, Masters of Wine, and vintners. The winery's note on the Gold: lemon curd, ripe pear, and white peach on the nose, then orange marmalade, marzipan, and toasted almond. Fermented and aged on neutral French oak, with a small addition of lightly toasted acacia. That is a named score on the 2023, not a Wine-Searcher aggregate.

Tasting

Lemon meringue, peach, pear, then marzipan.

The winery product note: a lively, lush white. Chardonnay joined by Viognier, Clairette Blanche, and Albariño. Lemon meringue, white peach, ripe pear, and marmalade, with a tiny touch of marzipan on the finish. Aged on neutral French oak with a kiss of lightly toasted acacia. The label on the bottle reads XXV, White Blend, 2023.

Winemaking

Chardonnay first. Three partners. Neutral oak.

Serial does not publish a percentage split. The winery is clear about the cast: Chardonnay at the core, supported by Viognier, Clairette Blanche, and Albariño, fruit from growers across Paso Robles and from the estate. The wine was fermented and aged on neutral French oak, with a small share in lightly toasted acacia, built for texture without heaviness.

The winery's 2023 vintage note: a cooler season that started and finished late, historic rainfall, then higher heat in July and October, and a very late harvest. They called the fruit structure and the flavor remarkable.

Truchard and Kandarian. Paso, 2015.

John Anthony Truchard started Serial Wines in 2015 with Jeff Kandarian, a Central Coast native and the executive winemaker for John Anthony Wine & Spirits. The idea was a series of Paso bottles from districts and small growers, not one vineyard repeated. The downtown tasting lounge opened in 2022 in the historic Odd Fellows building at 1226 Park Street.

The gold moth on the capsule and the label is the house mark. This bottle's label reads Serial, Paso Robles, XXV, White Blend, 2023.

Pairings

Roast chicken on fennel. Halibut with stone fruit.

Serial's own seasonal card for this Gold: roast chicken over fennel, grilled halibut with stone fruit salsa, creamy corn soup, or a charred peach and burrata salad. The two plates below are the ones that meet the glass halfway. Fennel for the oak and the marzipan. Peach for the marmalade.

Pairing Recipe
Roast chicken in a skillet with fennel and carrots, food only

Roast chicken with fennel

Crisp chicken, fennel wedges, a hot pan. The winery's first pairing, cooked as one skillet.

Why it works: Neutral oak and marzipan want browned fennel. The acidity still cuts the skin.

Pairing Recipe
Grilled halibut with peach salsa, food only

Grilled halibut with fruit salsa

Serial named grilled halibut with stone fruit salsa. This recipe is the same fish with a fresh fruit salsa.

Why it works: White peach and marmalade in the glass want fruit on the fish, not a cream sauce.
