Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard estate spotlight
Laura Catena explains why Adrianna has become a benchmark for high-altitude vineyard research and site-driven Argentine wine.

98-Point Adrianna Vineyard River Malbec — $135
A 2.6-hectare ancient riverbed parcel, shaped by white stones at 4,482 feet.
Catena Zapata’s River cuvée is 100% Malbec from one of Adrianna Vineyard’s most distinctive parcels. James Suckling found wild blackberry, spice, crushed stone, creamy tannins and cool minerality; Wine Advocate praised its layered, austere Gualtallary character. At $135 per bottle, this six-bottle allocation sits $55 below the supplied Wine-Searcher average and $65 below the supplied winery price.

River is a place before it is a wine
The parcel, elevation, white-stone soils and exact-vintage acclaim give this Malbec an identity far beyond varietal richness alone.

An ancient riverbed underfoot
Oval white stones and alluvial soils mark the River parcel. The stones drain freely, store daytime warmth and amplify the site’s mineral signature.
Altitude creates tension
At 4,482 feet in Gualtallary, intense mountain sunlight meets cold nights. The result is power carried by freshness instead of heaviness.
Two critics agree on stature
James Suckling’s 98 and Wine Advocate’s 97+ are exact-vintage ratings, with both reviews emphasizing texture, minerality and layered complexity.
Built for now and later
The winery describes River as enjoyable young yet capable of ageing for decades—a rare combination of immediate aroma and long cellar reach.
98 points leads. 97+ confirms the pedigree.
One dominant exact-vintage review, supported by a second critic who highlights the wine’s layered and austere Gualtallary expression.

Secure Your AllocationWild blackberry, violet, dark spice and crushed stone
Power and perfume move together, framed by cool mineral tension and a long, firm-creamy tannin line.

Catena described the 2019–2020 season as extremely dry, with the Uco Valley experiencing stronger water stress, reduced yields and an earlier red-wine harvest. The winery reported perfectly healthy grapes that produced great concentration, color, splendid acidity and extraordinary predicted ageing potential.
Wild blackberry and dark berry fruit arrive ripe and juicy, with enough freshness to keep the profile cool rather than jammy.
Violet and exuberant floral notes emerge as the wine opens, adding perfume above the darker fruit.
Full-bodied and powerful, with firm yet creamy tannins that carry the wine through a lengthy finish.
Crushed stone, iodine and a distinctive metallic note reflect the austere side of Gualtallary.
Cracked pepper, clove, chili chocolate and a savory curry-like twist deepen the fruit.
Pour at 60–64°F in a generous red-wine stem and give the wine room to unfold across the meal.
Dark fruit, crushed stone and firm texture lead, with pepper and iodine close behind.
Violet and berry aromas become more expressive while clove and savory spice gain definition.
The palate feels more layered and juicy, with mineral tension carrying the finish.
Built to preserve the parcel, not polish it away
Whole clusters, wild yeasts, measured extraction and seasoned French oak keep River’s perfume and stony structure in the foreground.

Whole-cluster foundation: The 2020 River underwent cold maceration with 50% whole clusters, a choice that helps build aromatic lift and structural detail.
Small-vessel fermentation: Fermentation took place in 225-litre oak barrels and 500-litre French-oak roll fermenters over 17–22 days, with wild yeasts and controlled temperatures.
Patient élevage: The wine aged 18–21 months in one- to two-year-old French oak. The aim is not sweet oak flavor; it is a frame sturdy enough for the parcel’s floral power, mineral austerity and long tannins.
From one Malbec vineyard in 1902 to Adrianna at the edge of possibility
Four generations of Catena ambition culminate in a vineyard once considered too high and too cold for serious winegrowing.

Nicola Catena planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza in 1902. Each generation pushed the family’s belief in Argentine wine further, but the decisive leap came when Nicolás Catena planted Adrianna in Gualtallary in 1992.
The site sat at the cool-climate limit of vine cultivation. Many doubted grapes would ripen there; an early winter storm even buried the young vineyard under snow. The vines endured, and altitude became a source of balance, fragrance and longevity.
Today Catena’s research program studies Adrianna parcel by parcel—its stones, plants, climate and microbial life. River is the delicious result of that long curiosity: one small ancient riverbed translated into a wine with its own voice.
Fire, herbs and savory richness
The winery recommends grilled meats. These two recipes give the wine char, richness and aromatic lift without overwhelming its mineral detail.
Keep the seasoning direct and let browned meat, fresh herbs and the wine’s own dark spice build the meal together.
Serve at 60–64°F and give the wine generous air in a broad decanter. The Wine Advocate note specifically observes that River opens slowly in the glass, becoming more floral, spicy and layered.
Grilled Skirt Steak with Chimichurri
Charred beef gives this powerful Malbec enough richness to lean against, while chimichurri adds the fresh herb and vinegar lift that keeps every bite lively.
Why it works: Beef fat rounds the firm tannins; smoke mirrors the wine’s dark spice; parsley and garlic draw out its floral and savory sides.

Rosemary-Garlic Lamb Chops
Lamb has the depth for River’s power without hiding its perfume. A hard sear adds char while rosemary and garlic keep the pairing aromatic and savory.
Why it works: Lamb softens the tannin line, rosemary echoes the wine’s herbal spice, and roasted garlic meets its earthy, mineral finish.

This is Catena at parcel scale: floral power, mountain freshness, stony structure and the cellar reach to make every bottle in the six feel purposeful.
Decant generously and pour with grilled steak or lamb as violet, berry, dark spice and mineral notes unfold.
The winery explicitly frames River as a wine to enjoy young or age for decades.
Build a vertical, open one for a serious dinner, and keep several bottles for the long view.
