2024 Orin Swift Bloodlines Cabernet Sauvignon, California, USA
He redrew the red rings more than 300 times.

A California Cabernet, tied to both sides of the family

The 2024 is Cabernet Sauvignon from California. It is not a Napa Valley bottling. Alcohol is 14.9 percent. Phinney ties the wine to winemaking on both sides of his family.
The red rings took drawing after drawing before he kept them. If a California Cabernet this ready for the grill is the bottle in front of you, what are you still weighing it against?

The rings, then the glass

The red rings took more than 300 drawings. Dave Phinney found winemaking on both sides of his family, and that is the mark on the bottle.
In the glass the color runs from a deep core to a fuchsia rim. Pluot, boysenberry, blackcurrant, black pepper, leather, and a rocky perfume lead, then blackberry and lavender, with drying tannins.
Pluot, pepper, lavender, and a dry finish

Pluot and boysenberry come first, then blackcurrant, black pepper, leather, and a rocky perfume. Blackberry and lavender follow, and the tannins dry the finish.

Carne asada and grilled spring onions
Charred beef meets the black pepper and leather. Grilled spring onions keep the plate bright next to the dark fruit.
Carne asada for the pepper and leather, and grilled spring onions beside the meat.
A short rest in the glass is enough.
Carne asada
J. Kenji Lopez-Alt marinates skirt steak with dried chiles, citrus, and spices, then grills it over high heat.
Why it works: The char and the chile line up with black pepper and leather, and the citrus lifts the boysenberry.

BBC Good Food lays trimmed spring onions on a hot grill or griddle until they soften and blacken.
